Next Monday, January 16th marks the deadline for public commenting on two EPA policy updates. In 2024, the EPA is making changes to its Meaningful Involvement Policies, and is looking to improve drinking water safety with their Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI).

The Meaningful Involvement Policy was last updated in 2003, with the intention of developing protocols of meaningful public involvement in the creation of EPA programming and throughout all of the EPA regions. The sixty day public commenting period for policy revisions and feedback will be up on Monday, January 16th. In the meantime, you can comment on the updated set of proposed rules and regulations through EPA contact form, via email, or through their draft policy docket.  The EPA is also hosting two public webinars this week at the following times:

January 10, 2024 from 5 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. (ET), register here

January 11, 2024 from 6 p.m.- 7:00p.m. (ET), register here

Translators are available for these webinars free of charge in advance of the webinars by emailing LanguageInterpretationTranslationRequest@epa.gov

The Lead and Copper Rule Improvement builds off of the 1991 Lead and Copper Rule, which regulates lead and copper in public drinking systems. In 2021, the EPA issued the first round of revisions to this rule and has since determined that there was significant room for improvement on these regulations, which they are now building in 2024. You can submit your lead and copper rule improvements online through public docket no. EPA-HQ-OW-2022-0801.The EPA will also be hosting a virtual public hearing on the LCRI on Monday, January 16th, which you can register for here.
