‘Waging Love’: Envisioning An Environmentally Just Detroit

Detroit environmental justice advocates and community members gathered last month to discuss the future of the city amidst threats to its residents’ health, including  industry expansion, power outages, and climate chaos. The discussion was led by a panel of five city activists and residents, including Ahmina Maxey from Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition and Norrel Hemphill from We the People of Detroit, two member organizations of the Midwest Environmental Justice Network.

Held in the city’s newly constructed social justice hub, Love Building, the panel was the last event in Seeds Series, a year-long effort by Allied Media Projects to bring thinkers together across their network. The panel’s title, “Waging Love: Building an Environmentally Just Detroit,” paid tribute to late Detroit activist Charity Mahouna Hicks whose work in the city was fueled by a question she often posed to others, “what does waging love look like?”
