Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition Action hiring Political Director

Michigan Alliance for Justice in Climate is an Alliance of over 50 groups that center people of color leading the climate justice movement in Michigan, working for just and equitable solutions to racial injustice, climate disasters, and environmental degradation. The purpose of MAJIC is to bring together voices from across the state to drive community-led solutions like pollution-free energy, an economy of care, regenerative agriculture, rebuilding strong infrastructure for clean and affordable water. MAJIC aims to build new narratives beyond divide-and-conquer strategies to bring urban and rural, bringing working class people together across race, class, language, and more to move our political actors, elected officials, and corporations, mobilizing against white supremacy, harmful extraction of Earth’s resources, and the exploitation of people and their labor.

 

Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition Action [MEJC Action!] is the anchor of MAJIC and a sponsored project of Allied Media Action Fund in Detroit MI. The MAJIC Manager will work closely with the MAJIC Steering committee, members of the Alliance, and the Green New Deal Network nationally to align with a federal agenda to support Michigan in advancing a climate justice agenda.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Aligning key messages, policy language, and unifying platforms between MAJIC C4 partners;

  2. Tracking key bills emerging from Washington DC on the House and Senate side

  3. Meeting and being a liaison with legislative staffers on the movement of these bills

  4. Directly advocating for key provisions with and for MAJIC C4 members 

  5. Debriefing the key allies and the public on bills, legislative votes, and calls to action by lifting up the voices of those most impacted, and champions 

  6. Target Michigan Congressional delegation, building knowledge within their staff of just solutions to climate disruption

Skills and Qualifications

  1. 3-years minimum of legislative experience in Washington DC

  2. Demonstrated knowledge of climate policy and environmental justice policy

  3. Excellent communications skills, political negotiation between coalitions and political actors

  4. Highly self-motivated, skilled in managing multiple streams of work

  5. Familiarity with Michigan political landscape, and the climate arena 

 

Accessibility:

The position requires long hours on the computer through multiple digital platforms. MAJIC will remain on zoom and remotely until a critical mass of participants feel safe and comfortable meeting in person, and as the vaccination schedule accelerates. This position does not require heavy lifting.

 9-mo contract - $40,000
