Michigan Alliance for Justice in Climate [MAJIC] is a new alliance of over 50 groups that center people of color in leading the climate justice movement in Michigan, working for just and equitable solutions to racial injustice, climate disasters, and environmental degradation.
The purpose of MAJIC is to bring together voices from across the state to drive community-led solutions like pollution-free energy, a regenerative economy, rebuilding strong infrastructure for clean and affordable water, homes and safer communities. MAJIC aims to build new narratives beyond divide-and-conquer strategies to bring urban and rural, working class people together across race, class, language, and more to move our political actors, elected officials, and corporations, mobilizing against white supremacy, harmful extraction of Earth’s resources, and the exploitation of people and their labor.
Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition is the anchor of MAJIC and a sponsored project of Allied Media Projects in Detroit MI. The MAJIC Manager will work closely with the MAJIC Steering committee, members of the Alliance, and the Green New Deal Network nationally to align with a federal agenda to support Michigan in advancing a climate justice agenda.
Duties and Responsibilities
Project management, coordination and administration (scheduling, agenda prep, calendaring), and facilitation of MAJIC Committees, Working Groups; assisting in the logistics of implementation of major events;
Managing and directing key consultants or staff, including but not limited to brand management, online, and media and communications;
Coordination of internal communications and directing external communications for MAJIC participants, supporters and implementers; serving as point person for MAJIC, assisting and orienting new members;
Integrating and synergizing working group tactics within all aspects of the campaign, managing relations of members with key interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution;
Tracking and reporting with Steering Committee and GNDN on the progress and accomplishments of MAJIC;
Support working groups with achieving their goals in electoral, narrative and policy arenas.
This is a full-time temporary position that requires 40 hours of work for approximately 12- 18 months. The start date will be early April.
Skills and Qualifications
At least 5 years experience running social justice or climate justice coalitions with Black, Indigenous, and people of the global majority for systems change;
Demonstration of a high level of project management knowledge, systems management
Excellent verbal and written communication between multiple parties with grace and respect during challenging and aggressive timelines;
Highly self-motivated, organized with speed, clarity and accomplishment in tracking and managing multiple streams of work;
Adept knowledge of online systems including social media platforms;
Familiarity with Michigan’s political landscape and movement ecology to assist in coalescing for power building utilizing strategies named above.
Desired:
Experience in political campaigns, Congressional offices, or legislative dynamics of Michigan’s Congressional delegation
Understanding of climate policy
Experience with and commitment to transformative justice and restorative practices
Demonstrated ability to bring groups together using various cross-movement tactics including but not limited to electoral organizing, healing justice strategies, and community organizing strategies working together for biggest impact.
Accessibility:
Applicant must live in Michigan. The position requires long hours on the computer through multiple digital platforms. MAJIC will remain on zoom and remotely until a critical mass of participants feel safe and comfortable meeting in person, and as the vaccination schedule accelerates. The position will require some evenings and weekends, with irregular hours, and some travel within Michigan. This position does not require heavy lifting.
