Just Transition Northwest Indiana leading campaign to close the EPA coal ash loophole
Just Transition Northwest Indiana has been leading a campaign to close the EPA coal ash loophole. Coal ash is a toxic material left over from burning coal for electricity, For decades, utilities have disposed of coal ash dangerously, dumping it in unlined ponds and landfills where the toxins leak into groundwater. The toxin has been leaking from the Northwest Indiana Public Service Co. generating plant in Michigan City into Lake Michigan.
This map from Earthjustice shows coal ash sites across the country, with a majority concentrated in the Midwest. The current EPA coal ash rule doesn't mandate the removal of legacy coal ash. Thanks to advocacy by JTNWI and their partners, the EPA is reviewing the rule and are expected to publish draft updates in May, opening up a 60-day public comment period.
